Hey Teutone what say you??

While Berlin is often the star attraction in Germany, Munich is the city that will meet your expectations of what Germany really is. After all, it's home to everything typically German – think lederhosen, beer and oompah.

Headline attraction
Beer. Hell, the city attracts more than six million people for two weeks late September/early October to celebrate all that is good about beer. But even if you decide to avoid Oktoberfest there are plenty of beerhalls in the city which are open all year. The Hofbräuhaus is always popular.

Green space
It may seem difficult to justify spending a day in a park, but Englischer Garten (English Gardens) is one exception. You can see the Greek-style temple Monopteros, sunbathe naked at Schönfeldwiese and visit the Chinesischer Turm, which is surrounded by a cracking beer garden.

Hang ten
It might be located in the heart of Europe but you can still go for a surf in Munich. At the southern end of Englischer Garden there is a bridge over the Isar River where surfers dive in. The wave is caused by submerged rocks and surfers can be found there throughout the year. Even if you can’t surf it’s quite a sight to check out.

Museums for all
Munich has museums for everyone, whatever you’re into. The Residenz Museums within the Residenz Palace and the Königsplatz museums are good places to start for fine arts, while boy racers can check out the BMW Museum. Also worth a look is the Deutsches Museum.

Out of town
It was in and around Munich that Hitler and his Nazis took hold of German history. To see the worst of how this played out, jump on a train and visit nearby Dachau concentration camp. You can look around the site yourself, but there are also guides who will be able to tell you about the tragic history.

One to avoid
Don’t plan your day around the Glockenspiel. It’s a second-rate tourist attraction in Marienplatz where figurines re-enact a traditional Bavarian story. It happens every day at 11am (as well as noon and 5pm in summer) and lasts about two minutes. The best bit is when it ends and everyone looks around laughing: “How bad was that?” You’ve been warned.

sightseers Need to know

When to go: Oktoberfest, which runs for two weeks every year finishing on the first weekend of October, is brilliant, but it’s a great city all year round

Getting there: Search for flights
