Unless some pretty drastic measures are taken, medicare will go insolvent during our lifetimes. National health care seems a natural remedy, though it won't come cheap.

This is one of those nasty problems like being stuck on the side of a mountain, alone wedged to the side of the mountain in a crevasse . Your choices are to die on the mountain or cut the wedged limb off and try to get down to medical help before you die.

We have, just through a combination of shear mass of population, increased production, decreased employment, increased retired, a changed economic model created a very large system that is not going to self-resolve, no matter how much entrepreneurial American ingenuity is thrown at it. And everyone is going to pay, one way or the other.

They need to start teaching, in primary school and again in high school, the definition of a Ponzi scheme and examples of them in real life. Bernie Madoff, Amway/Arbonne, Social Security, etc.

Anything that is dependent upon people paying in early and cashing out later, into one big pool, is unsustainable. Shit happens, and when it does, it's not good.

The stock market, despite it's uncanny resemblance to Las Vegas casinos, is at least decent enough to tell people "Look, you're probably going to lose money." Just nobody pays attention to it, which is on them. Ponzi schemes never let on that you can lose. Like Social Security.

Social Security would have been sustainable had it not been futzed with so bad in the 1980s. THAT is not the issue as much as rising medicare costs for retirees. One of the biggest problems, and one that everyone ignored was the boomers.

From the article I linked on the Ouch, Pay Cut thread:
"In 2011, the first members of the Baby Boom will reach age 65, and the Baby Boom will have decreased to 25 percent of the total population (in the middle series). The last of the Baby-Boom population will reach age 65 in the year 2029. By that time, the Baby-Boom population is projected to be only about 16 percent of the total population. "

http://www.census.gov/population/www...e/natproj.html

And we propagated as one would expect and we are all living longer due to better medical research and better nutrition and less abject poverty. So we build a mass of folks who, at 62 shut off their paid insurance and get a little white paper card and start in the system. And we are hitting that number at a million a day.

So we live longer but spend more money on doctors and visits and pharma and dental and glasses and...
