Until politicians are introduced to the word "NO", our leaders will continue to set unrealistic expectations of what the federal government ought to be involved with.

.....but that ain't gonna git 'em re-elected....

And how do you avoid the converse? You can't define the parameters of failure without defining the parameters of success, either implicitly or implied. .
"I consider the foundation of the Constitution as laid on this ground: That 'all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States or to the people' (10th Amendment). To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specifically drawn around the powers of Congress, is to take possession of a boundless field of power, no longer susceptible to any definition."

And ...

"To preserve [the] independence [of the people,] we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses, and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they now do, on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, 1816. ME 15:39

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and that’s what I intend to reverse.

Yeah, old dead white guys wrote down their thoughts on lots of stuff, and their pontifications made a lot of sense in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Learn, grow and move forward...or get out of the way. This nation needs to start operating like a modern first world Republic, and leave silly grandiose myths of rugged individualism in the past.

^ You must admit though, that the incentive certainly exists to abuse the good will of others. How do you suggest we gleefully abide that?

I gleefully abide nothing. Yes, there are and always will be abuses, but my public policy focus is primarily interested in the greatest good. Our current non-policy regarding the nation's healthcare system is not focused on serving the greater good...of course our nation's defense system isn't either. Fuck it, we need another revolution. I'd prefer that we just break up the federation in favor of regional states. Cascadia would do quite well with that arrangement; you'd get stuck with Texas--ha ha

That doesn't sound very Cascasian. Talk to Texans; they love that sort of thing
