Exhibition.......not to be missed!

heh, heh.......From Within Outward: Frank Lloyd Wright! heh, heh.......at the Guggenheim Museum, NY 15th May - 23rd August 2009.......not to be missed indeed by anyone having the slightest of interest in Design & Architecture!

The Guggenheim Museum scores a half century this year.....heh, heh...... In celebration, it is mounting a show in honour not of its founder or of his collection but the Architect who designed the building and who, in doing so, changed the idea of the art museum forever. When Wright was commissioned to design a museum to house the Solomon Guggenheim collection of non-objective painting in 1943, he was already, at 76, a modern master - inventor of the horizontal prairie house and the geometric Usonian home. With the dynamic, spiralling snailshell of the Guggenheim, completed 6 months after his death in 1959, Wright triumphed simultaneously over Manhattan's grid and pompous rectilinear museums everywhere......heh, heh!

Instead of the usual multi-level art park, where gallery goers wonder dazed through disconnected rooms, Wright's intention was "to make the building and the painting an uninterrupted, beautiful symphony such as never existed in the world of art before." ......awesome! heh, heh........

In realising this symphony, he also gave birth to the art museum as stage and spectacle, its own space an experience as exhilarating as its exhibits! Without the Guggenheim New York, there would be no Bilbao.

This Exhibition pursues his reinvention of interior space through 64 projects, displaying over 200 original drawings alongside specially commissioned models and digital animations. For those unable to travel to NY or the the later in the year venue of Bilboa, TC Boyle's racy novalisation of Wright's notorious love-life, The Women, offers some compensation - as does the spectacular Guggenheim shoot-out in Tom Tykwer's recent film, The International..........heh, heh.........miss at your own peril!

I admit Wright was very significant, but his designs were rarely practical and a reach too far in a quest to be original. I still like his work though, but I feel that it, like art deco, is best appreciated in a commercial setting. I feel more comfortable around known and refined architectural influences, in short I prefer evolution over revolution. Like this...

I was at the Guggenheim yesterday for about 30 minutes and they are setting the displays now. I only spotted the banner while walking in the Park.

So now I get to schedule another trip. I planned DC in a couple of weeks but this might change that.
