FTL,
You can bypass the snottiness. I agree they have more than a tough row to hoe. But I doubt it will be insurmountable.

All you loony left wing kookbergers need to take a deep breath and come down off the ceiling. This is neither a coup for the dem's nor a serious loss for the rep's. Specter has never really been a Republican, in voting record or rhetoric. He will not vote differently now, so there will be no added advantage for the dem's. Besides, most Republican's I know are happy to see him go. He did not make this switch as a matter of political principle; he made the switch because he knew he was going to lose the PA Republican primary to Pat Toomey, as he almost did the last time. I think most Republicans would also like to see Sen's. Snowe and Collins take a hike too.

Don't believe everything you think

The Hill’s Blog Briefing Room Specter had disavowed a switch

April 28, 2009
Specter had disavowed a switch
@ 12:28 pm by Eric Zimmermann

News of Sen. Arlen Specter's party switch today comes after several months of strong statements to the contrary by the Pennsylvania Senator.

In a March 17th interview with The Hill, Specter said he absolutely would not switch parties:

[Democrats] are trying very hard for the 60th vote. Got to give them credit for trying. But the answer is no.

I'm not going to discuss private talks I had with other people who may or may not be considered influential. But since those three people are in the public domain, I think it is appropriative to respond to those questions.

I am staying a Republican because I think I have an important role, a more important role, to play there. The United States very desperately needs a two-party system. That's the basis of politics in America. I'm afraid we are becoming a one-party system, with Republicans becoming just a regional party with so little representation of the northeast or in the middle atlantic. I think as a governmental matter, it is very important to have a check and balance. That's a very important principle in the operation of our government. In the constitution on Separation of powers.

I'm not a real dickhead...but I acted like one in high school.

Yep the GOP is not going to Recover. FTL knows it all.

Well now there is that filibuster majority. Show the world how the Dems can fix everything guys!

Remember McBear, the GOP can not do anything to stop any of this because the Dems are in the majority.

This is going to be rich...if we survive it.
Spector is one of the most respected members of the Senate, how is he not a man of integrity? Is it because "integrity" is defined by you as lock-step BeckBot slavishness?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

It's the Incredibly Shrinking GOP. You better keep you eye on the young GOPer's, they have had enough of the social-issue GOP and are headed for the Democrats, just ask Megan McCain. If they can jettison the religious kooks, they have a chance, otherwise, they will become a regional party. It will end up being the conservative Dems vs the liberal Dems, and the GOP will be irrelevent. I'd say the first step is to get rid of that turkey Steele, and quit letting Limbaugh run the party. You guys need William F Buckley or Barry Goldwater to rise from the grave.

I have a pretty strong opinion of people who switch parties after they are elected. If they want to switch, fine. Just quit your office and run again on the other ticket. The left may want Specter, but what if it was Al Franken wanting to be a Republican? No association with a man like that is worth an extra seat in Congress. It's bad politics and a scam on the voters.

Abdicate your throne and re-run.

Did the GOP not throw him under a bus?
