From The Mouths of Babes
We were just watching F1's Friday practice, eating dinner, and talking about the recent repair to my SLK32. I think there's a lateral speed sensor going out on me, so I was explaining what a lateral speed sensor was and what it did and taking guesses at how they work. I was explaining accelerometers and gyroscopes and the algebra that takes all sorts of inputs into consideration and spits out a yes/no decision on what, if anything, to do about how you're driving. Pretty cool stuff with a short acronym - ESP. Then we were talking about how CFD does in seconds what takes people with wind tunnels and carbon-fiber fabrication facilities alone weeks to do. Also cool.
The boy thought it was pretty cool too, so I told him "Math and science," pointed to the TV, and said "that [Formula 1] is what you get when you combine gearheads with math & science. NASA is what you get when you combine astronomers with math & science. When you combine video gamers with math & science, you get Halo 3." Hoping to convince him to
About 10 minutes later, he's feeding the dog, and asks "What do you mix to get NASCAR?" I had forgotten what we were talking about at first, and asked him "What?!?" about three times, when he said "You were talking about mixing math & science to get F1 - what do you mix to get NASCAR?"
I told him "Beer, and stupidity."
