Yesterday there was an editorial in the NYT calling for the abolishment of the USAF. In a similar vein, please explain to me what the Marines do (besides guarding Navy bases) that can't currently be accomplished by the Army. I'm genuinely interested and have long wondered why they were ever afforded a separate branch in the military.

Uh, ok...but why are they currently separate? I make no secret my desire to shrink the overall military to just that which we require to defend our national airspace, borders and territorial waters...but, at the very least, I want a military that makes some sense for our modern realities. Hell, why not just have one branch of the military: The Marinarvy

The army/navy/air force are integeral parts of a working machine but the machine could not operate to a high level without the special forces They are the oil that makes the machine operate under any conditions
