Bluetooth proximity ads

Does anyone here have hands-on experience with the 500 or so dollar devices for bluetooth adverts? If so, what are the pros and cons? What do your statstics tell you about this type of marketing? Do they really reach 100 yards? Is the supplied software good to work with?
Thanks for your ideas.

Will you have to wear aluminum foil over your head so you can avoid radiation?
