Exactly whose waters, 200+ miles from their coast, are they "protecting"?

Exactly what "enemy" is steaming by in cargo ships?

If they want to die for their land, why don't they stay "on land" and try to make it better?

I'd at least have some respect for them if they were honest and admitted to the fact that they are criminals who simply reject the basis of civilized society.

Do I really need to point out whose playbook this sounds like?

Just as always it is about money. Justification is there for the righteousness of it all. Iraq anyone?

This conflict has obviously been escalated to the next level.

Defiant Somali pirates hijack four more vessels

By Elizabeth A. Kennedy

Associated Press

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Mombasa, Kenya —- Somali pirates captured four ships and took more than 60 crewmen hostage in a brazen hijacking spree, while the American captain freed from their grip planned to reunite with his crew and fly home to the United States today.

Pirates have vowed revenge for the deaths of three colleagues at the hands of U.S. snipers rescuing Capt. Richard Phillips, as well as for two others slain by French forces in a separate rescue last week.

“Our latest hijackings were meant to show that no one can deter us,” Omar Dahir Idle, a pirate based in the coastal town of Harardhere, said by telephone.

^^^ Same essential article is circulating all the news sites, it's where I got the quote from. Omar is indeed the psychotic pirate.

I'm thinking an aircraft carrier, with a couple of P3s and some fighters armed with conventional cannon and laser-guided ASMs...hostile speedboat approaches shipping vessel, P3 paints, ASM launches, no more hostile speedboat. P3 identifies the mother ship that launched it, paints it, ASM launches, no more mother ship. A couple of weeks of that and they'd have no more boats from which to launch their attacks and when no one returns from the raids they'd probably have a shorter line of new recruits. Cost would be less than a couple of ship's ransoms.

Although actually I'd prefer a technological solution. Start refitting ships with a secure holding area (preferably hidden/difficult to locate) and an impenetrable engine room. Install a remote override in the secure holding area tied into GPS navigation with external cameras, etc. Run them on Macs to keep Drew happy.

As you approach these waters, disengage bridge control, essentially running it on autopilot/remote for the next several hundred miles. The crew enters the secure holding area and runs the ship from there. Pirates approach, no evasive action necessary. They scamper aboard and scurry about like rats, shoot up the place, doesn't matter, ship continues undisturbed. The would-be thieves can't stop the ship or change its course; their choice is either leave or go along for the ride. If they remain on board, then when they're far enough away from Somalia, the other navy ships (not just ours, but the multination contingent) can intercept and arrest or engage the hitchhikers, impound their boat and send them to the nation of the ship's registry for trial. Expensive? Yes, but lots less than paying ransom and enduring the uncertainty and delays. As more of such ships gain the technology and fewer pirates are left, the issue will resolve itself.

Greg: I like the ideas in your first paragraph....

Regarding the technology solution, it works OK on aircraft to isolate the control deck from the rest of the plane. But on a ship the frustrated pirates might simply set the ship on fire, and then disembark.

The real solution, as realised by Thomas Jefferson 200 years ago, was to defeat the Barbary coast pirates by firepower and drive them from the sea.

The boat these guys have been using are small, and the ocean is pretty large. Small targets are hard to hit even with smart weapons, and can you imagine the noise if the wrong target was hit just once?

This isn't as easy as one might imagine.

One has to question also how many of the ships hijacked were not in it themselves? What better way to make some quick money with the pirates doing the dirty work? Life of a merchant seaman is harsh (two of my uncles were merchant seamen during their younger years) and pay is low. If they can make a few quick bucks without consequences, why not surrender the ship, get a cut from the pirates and sail on their merry ways. Until next trip, then all over again.
