Noel Choong, who heads the Malaysia-based piracy watchdog group International Maritime Bureau, said...arming crews would only raise the stakes. Pirates do not normally harm their hostages, but adding guns to the equation could change that.

"We do not approve or support that crews be armed," Choong said. "Once you start arming the crew, then the pirates will start shooting the crew, even an unarmed crew. ... Once that is done you will have more problems because the crew will start shooting at other ships."
Quote:
But owners of ships plying the pirate-infested waters off Somalia's coast have balked at having firearms onboard, despite an increasing number of attacks where bullets pierced hulls or rocket propelled grenades whooshed overhead.

The reason is twofold: Owners fear pirates would be more likely to continue shooting once on board if they confronted weapons, and the company might be held liable for deaths or injuries inflicted by someone on the vessel.
Be that as it may I'm sure Capt. Phillips wished his crew were armed about now.

To offset the punch of the shoulder fired rockets they carry you best have something more than beer bottles and AK's.

RPGs - and how many rounds do they carry? Will they risk setting the ship on fire and jeopardizing the ransom? Call their bluff and fight back, some dead pirates might turn things around - at the very least there would be fewer pirates.

That's funny as hell. I don't think Jay got the pun/reference (even with the picture); besides, I always thought you were more into smack than blow.

I agree, but can merchant ship crews carry weapons?

Actually, I have heard of Somalia, have an acquaintance who has been a relief worker there. It's a horrible place I'd never want to visit, much less live. Nevertheless, the vast majority of the population gets by with aid relief, subsistence agriculture and menial work, and people do leave there to find a better life.

Apparently you're also from Jersey and seem to have all the answers, but don't care to share, just post to denigrate others. Perhaps you're also of the bleeding heart/victim mentality mindset that thinks all people are basically good, their circumstances are the cause of this activity? You're welcome to such opinions, mine is that they are hogwash. At any given time each of us is free to determine how we will act or respond, and those of that bent will choose crime and illegality.

As for these guys not being cohesive groups, many articles I've read have indicated that this is actually part of a large crime syndicate with a few leaders, just like the Colombian drug cartels. They stay on land and pull the strings and don't really care what happens to the guys out there doing the actual work. (Which would explain the response of sending other pirated hijacked ships to the area in a show of support, right?)

Moreover, even criminals that hate each other will come together against common enemies, which in this case include decency, humanity, peace, honor, integrity, honesty, etc.

I'm not looking for a violent end to this, I'd much rather see it end peaceably with no loss of life on either side. Generally speaking these criminals don't seem to be suicidal maniacs, but that certainly doesn't excuse their criminal enterprise and it needs to stop.

This strikes me as somewhat similar to what is going on in Mexico with the drug wars that some pundits think are very close to spilling into some southern US states. The Mexican government has not pursued them with any vigor, they've gotten bolder and more aggressive and it's nearly out of control, much like the non-government in Somalia. The Mexican "pirates" are apparently ready to reach beyond their borders, too.

I'm glad the other hijacked ships are heading out there, though (and are approaching a naval blockade). A few small charges to their propulsion and they are dead in the water, too. Start blocking their satellite phones to cut off their communication from the leaders, and it all becomes a waiting game, and with no real government to stand on the other side. Then you can cut deals with the pirates directly and help them understand that any hostility toward the hostages will ultimately be their own peril.

Thank you. I'm sure most did. I'm also sure he didn't.
