I have told this story before. In 1999 I went to the Detroit International Auto Show. I wanted to see all the new technology in the new VOLT that they were introducing. The car was tucked away in the basement of the Cobo Arena. The technology was good, the display was hurriedly thrown together and the lack of fanfare was deafening. After I finished I went up the seemingly mile long escalator to the main floor to be dumped out exactly at the introduction of the Hummer H1, just purchased by GM and introduced by Arnold. It was a bit more crowded.
Spin off Volt and loan the new company money. Volt has some very good technology and very good potential. It needs built and it would be a shame to let a decade of R&D just die because a group of execs[Lutz] are too biased to make the right decisions.
And to answer Dig's question, No, not been to the Chevy dealer to drop a down payment on a Volt. I did, however start the paperwork on a Tesla Model S for 2011. So far it is a PITA to buy.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
