well if CAFE standards are a problem then how come its simply not for the Jap and euro manufacturers?? GM car technologies can be dated back to soviet era. They should really join hands with Lada, VAZ, ZIL etc
Russia might be compared to North America in driving needs (big distances, deep pockets, fuel abundance), the rest of Europe and Japan is the opposite pole (short distances, narrow streets, expensive fuel, people in a recession).
Can you now figure out the difference in technology orientation and experience between the two groups. Take the Acura Legend, lots of pep, lousy pick up (no decent torque until well under way). Great car, but not as good as some competitors (not all rice burners). Take the average European car, you ride it over 20 miles to work and you are an odd case. Got it?
BTW, we should go hire some designers in East Germany and reconstruct and tool the plastic smoker, was it Trebbank?, something like that. A disposable car, that would really stimulate the auto industry. We have not signed the Tokyo Protocol, so we would not have anything to worry about.
