A paragraph from two juxtaposed stories in the same local paper on the same day. It is good that we have our priorities well squared away.

I think my head is going to explode.

Lexington
Calipari will have an irregular salary: $31.65 million over eight years, which makes him college basketball's highest-paid coach. That includes a buyout of $3 million per year remaining on the deal should UK decide to fire him without cause.

Harlan County
We have 367 homeless children in our county. Now that doesn’t mean that they are living on the streets, but that they are living with other family members or taking on what is referred to as the ‘buddy system,’ where they will stay with one family one night and then on to another the next night,” said Miniard. “This absolutely floored me when I heard about this — where a student will go home with one student one night — borrow their clothes and then on to another student’s home the next night and do the same thing.”

Harlan's population is 33,000.

Super gross. And Archie Bunker was criticized when he talked about midget bowling. What are these children being taught? How to hate and despise people. Hope they are not quick learners. Kentucky is a rich state which I'm sure could accommodate 367 children in a fixed environment till they are 18. Talk about good news, bad news... this sucks to high heaven.

Kentucky is NOT a rich state, that is PART of the problem. The rest of the problem is poverty and unemployment. And there is no real place to escape either.

While the Unemployment rate shows Harlan with a 10%, with a population of 33,000 only 9,000 have jobs. And with a median FAMILY income of $22K things are somewhat tight, even for the workers. So a bunch have dropped off radar and are doing what they have to do.

When Coal was king and there was an expectation of full, lifelong employment, that area continued a generational path to quit school at 16 or 17 and go into the mines. That worked until the seams dried up or the coal was purchased from offshore. Also surface mining killed much deep mining. The area was a one trick pony and didn't recover.

So kids live in cars or with friends or are shuffled from person to person. In the summer I usually have a cousin's kid or two for a month if I am in town [and once when I was in NYC].

Xavier's Miller to Arizona

Sean Miller of Xavier has accepted the head-coaching job at Arizona, ending a sometimes frustrating search for a high-profile replacement for Hall of Famer Lute Olson.

The university announced the hiring Monday after a confusing few hours in which it first was reported by several media outlets that Miller had turned down the job.

"We believe we've brought in the best young coach in the country," Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood said.

Miller, 40, went 120-47 record in five seasons at Xavier, guiding the team to the NCAA Tournament four times. Arizona won the NCAA championship under Olson in 1997 and has made three other trips to the Final Four.

The A10 is a relatively very weak conference.

BTW: Your damn ads that jump in front of our text boxes all the time are very annoying. Someone needs to reign in your ad department!

Don't believe everything you think

I thought it an odd choice. Possibly a good one, time will tell, but not exactly a proven commodity for such a high-profile program.

I'll mention the ad thing to the ad people.

Miller is a good choice. I was hoping he would be coming to Kentucky. He has a good reputation and has run a very good program.
