"English Learners"

New terminology for students who speak other languages as their first language. Sort of astonishing (to me, anyway) how many there are now. Some counties have over 50% "English Learners" in their schools. Someone please explain Glacier County, Montana? 43%? Granted the overall quantity is small, but still! Arlington County, where I used to live, is 31% and the school nearest my house has over 80 different languages spoken. I'm glad I'm not a schoolteacher!

Hey Mars - up here in MoCo my kid had 117 native languages spoke at Gaithersburg High. She had 6 kids from Sudan in her class that couldn't speak to each other because of dialect. I too am amazed at the extent of non-native english speakers (a non-political statement). Even up in my part of Pennsyl-tucky there is now a growing Hispanic population. In DC I don't even think about it any more. In my neighborhood I'm pretty sure being white and of European descent makes me a minority. They probably said "there goes the neighborhood" when I moved in.

I figured their kids (being quite native) would nonetheless have their 'native' language as a second language by this point in time. Wrong I guess! Glacier County QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Folks don't usually hang in Montana 'cause they wanna blend. If you can't hold onto your native culture there, where can you?

So I went out to find what town was in Glacier County to see where the 13 Asians had their Chinese Restaurant and found this website.

The music for the area's culturally diverse official website is freakin priceless.

Glacier County, Montana

I do however like their Art Deco government building on the website. We have a very similar one here in Lex.
