For the mechanical prodigy in all of us

Inline 8 double-acting (fires on both sides of the piston) 'marine' diesel in a museum in Copenhagen. It was originally built for a power-station in 1933.

Fires on both sides of the piston. The connecting rod actually goes through the bottom head, so there is provisions for cooling the rod as it's more critical to keep rod temperatures down rather than piston temps down in this case. Notice the bank of 8 oil regulators for lubrication.

All the smoke is a result of the connecting rod sealing to the head poorly. I don't blame it; it's a nearly impossible task.

Giant engines like this typically run very slow, in the range of 100 to 150 RPM.
But the torque they produce is phenomenal, often several million ft-lbs at the crank, so they can be directly coupled to a giant 35 ft or so diameter propeller.

Wartsilla-Sultzer inline 14 cylinder 2 stroke diesel marine engine weighs 2,300 tons, develops 108,920 HP at 102 RPM, and whopping 5,608,312 ft-lbs of torque at 102 RPM. The fuel consumption at the most economical power setting is about 1,660 gallons of diesel oil/hour.
