Flu Shots

I encourage everyone to make sure they have gotten their flu shots for this year.

Last night, I took my fiance to the doctors, where they tested and confirmed that she has Influenza A, which can be deadly this year. it is resistant to Tamiflu, so there is no treatment for it at all this year.

She has been quarantined at home for the next 7-10 days per doctors orders.

She already has lung issues, from years of smoking, so her lungs are weak. I was told to get her to the hospital ASAP if there are any problems with her breathing...As I sit here and type this thread, her breathing is a bit labored now, but not bad enough to take her yet.

I had the flu shot in December, so if anything, I'll get a few days of aches and pains.

We've already had a couple of flu related deaths in my area this year, so I am scared shitless right now.

Please...for yours and your family's sake, go out and get this flu shot.

I'm not a real dickhead...but I acted like one in high school.

Thanks for the advise. Funny I was just thinking about that the other day as I have not gotten my flu shot this year yet. I usually get mine around Dec but got busy at work and didn't have the time to do it.

By the way, when is the flu season over? April? Or May?

The CDC has no cutoff date for getting influenza immunization but we’re getting late in the season. Remember that once immunized it takes 2 weeks to develop protective antibodies and during that interval you remain vulnerable to infection. For the April, May period the CDC recommends immunization if surveillance data reveals that influenza is still prevalent in the community.

Although it is true that the H1N1 strain of influenza A is resistant to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) this year all strains (of A and B) remain sensitive to zanamivir (Relenza) which is a dry inhaled power. Also the H3N2 strain and all influenza B remain sensitive to oseltamivir. There is no simple, rapid, reliable test that will tell your doctor which strain you have. The problem in your fiancé’s case is that zanamivir cannot be used in people with lung disease. The alternative, which is recommended for those who cannot take zanamivir, is to use a combination of oseltamivir and rimantadine although the effectiveness of this regimen is unknown.

People who live in close quarters with those who are vulnerable to complications of influenza should also be immunized even if they have no other indications to do so in order to prevent transmission (such as yourself).

Epidemic influenza historically has its origins in Asia, particularly southern China, where people live with and like animals. It originates in birds and is passed on to pigs where genetic re-assortment takes place. Those living in close quarters with pigs and birds (the Chinese) then acquire the virus who then spread it to others.

Hope that clarifies the origin of influenza for you.

Just in case it is better to get it in the Queen's English, what Baby Boo explained is that you have to get a shot every year because the chinks live like pigs and have relations with animals from whom they contract the WOF (Winter Oriental Flu). Then, since they don't want it for themselves, they pass it on and one carrier has your ticket. Now, if you smoked, worked the mines, or in a foundry, etc., your lungs will be like mine if catching the flu and primary medicines will not be advised. So, we would be up the creek and the best we could do is watch soap operas for eight to ten days, or worse. Now, you add this to your socialized medicine and what's the conclusion? I got to get the shot! So, go and get it.
