Have your say: Barack Obama

On Thursday, the US President issued a videotaped appeal to Iran offering a "new beginning" of diplomatic engagement.

Supreme Leader sharply criticised US behaviour towards Iran since its 1979 Islamic revolution and said the US was "hated in the world" and should stop interfering in other countries' internal affairs.

"They give the slogan of change but in practice no change is seen ... We haven't seen any change," Mr Khamenei said in a televised speech to mark the Iranian New Year.

He was speaking in the northeastern city of Mashhad, a day after Mr Obama expressed an openness to face-to-face diplomatic contacts with Tehran.

Mr Khamenei said a change of US "words" was not enough and added: "We will watch and we will judge ... You change, our behaviour will change."

Eric - Why are you slagging off the US here? The Galloway issue is with Canada.

ps. I think that the UK should bar Galloway also. He is one of the many 'enemy within'.....

We’re addicted to the American Century. The world has a bad track record with us: we see it as a fundamentally evil and unstable place. The last time we minded our own business we got WWII – or so we believe. The Europeans/NATO need to take over; this American is ready for us to retire from the Policing the World job. Of course that won’t happen, we don’t trust anyone else to look after our interests.

The debacle that was Bush ‘foreign policy’ is yet another mess Obama must clean up; some nations will give the President an opportunity to establish a new policy but others such as Iran will continue to focus on Bush’s failures - Iraq, Afghanistan, ‘Axis of Evil,’ etc. – and overall foreign policy incompetence.

You've got to love the conservative government of Canada under Harper.

They were the first ones to pull out of the racist Durban II conference and then they follow this up denying Galloway a visa for being a supporter of a terrorist group (he is).

One could only wish that Harper could serve as an example to our spineless commander in chief.

I obviously have a different opinion but I am interested in your interpretation of where we would be in this century if it wasn't for the USA?

Let's see...let's start with Europe.

Who was equipped to deal with Hitler? History would tell us that nobody was until the US got involved with that big stick of ours called mass production.

Ok so let's also look at the Marshall plan, throw in NATO. None of what is modern day Europe would be even in existence if it was for the US.

Technology.

Europe has this knack for coming up with some really cool things like the car but then not much else. It took an American to come up with Assembly line and bring cars to the masses.

What about medical advances? Polio, Pace Makers, Artificial Hearts, etc. It seems to me that all of the greatest medical advancements come from the "Broken" and "Worst" health care system in the world.

Also, let's not forget the PC. Or the transistor, microprocessor, or the great leap forward by Al Gore, who we all know now did indeed invent the internet.

So also let's talk about world political security.

Who kicked the Soviets back to Moscow without ever starting WWIII? Who led the world to its greatest prosperity, greatest increase in standard of living, indeed probably its most peaceful time in World History? That great stabilizer called the USA.

Have we made mistakes? Yes we have, but we correct course. Some would say President Obama is a correction others disagree. But we changed parties (maybe not so much in the policies but there is a "D" in the White House instead of an "R" so I guess that is change.)

We are inherently a country that wants to do good. Our interests are for the greater benefit of our citizens. Our freedoms are for the benefit of our interests.

In broad general terms if we are free to innovate, invent, and produce we will prosper.

Is it so hard to say that if the world is free to do the same that they will prosper as well? Therefore that means what is in the U.S. interest or what is good for the U.S. is good for the world.

The Iranians are right. Plain and simple.

"Supreme Leader sharply criticised US behaviour towards Iran since its 1979 Islamic revolution and said the US was "hated in the world" and should stop interfering in other countries' internal affairs."

Mr Khamenei said a change of US "words" was not enough and added: "We will watch and we will judge ... You change, our behaviour will change."

This is the absolute truth.

I actually laughed when I read this.

This is like Al Capone criticizing Elliot Ness' behaviour towards the Mafia and saying the Treasury Department was "hated in the country" and should stop interfering in other mobsters' internal affairs.
