Google Street View: Fascinating or Controversial?

For some it's a fascinating snapshot of modern Britain, in all its beauty and ugliness.

For others, it's a gross invasion of privacy that could leave homes vulnerable to crime and people open to embarrassment.

Yesterday, Google unveiled the controversial Street View, a web service that allows anyone in the world to type in a British address or postcode and see a detailed, 360 degree picture of that street - including close-ups of buildings, cars and people.

Google Street View launches in 25 cities around Britain to give users a 360 degree close-up of where they live | Mail Online

I personally find it quite fascinating, but then again I haven't found myself on it yet...

Oh, the irony.

Google's street view has been in the US for a long, long time. Here if you request it they'll remove certain views from your home/street, my guess is Google will do the same there. They aren't interested in that kind of unpopular litigation.

But the ironic thing is the humorous-but-scary graffiti on the building on the right of the shot you linked. You guys are under constant real-time surveillance, and you're suddenly squeamish about static shots from Google?

Sheesh.

In answer to the question in your thread title, it's neither. Boring or inconsequential comes closer.

As greg said, we have had this for a good amount of time now. My house is on its second iteration.

The thing Britain has with CCTV is amazing. I have never seen so many. Only in a few areas of the US do we have that level of surveillance.

Back before 9/11 I used to rest at a bench in Times Square and there was a webcam that covered the area. I would call wifie so she would logon and I could wave at her since she was 770 miles away back in Kentucky. It was a novelty then.

Now Times Square has 240 cameras. THAT is a bit much and more like Trifalgar.

I wouldn't worry so much about Street View. The way things change it is out of date within 18 months anyway.

McBear,

Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.

By then they'll just give us the real-time live feed of the streets. And they WILL and people will BEG for it, not knowing what there really signing themselves upto.

In 5-6 years time, being "watched" will be just be the next "normal" thing, like having a Cell Phone or logging onto the internet. Fucking makes me sick.

Maybe this will bring people closer. With it anybody can be Big Brother and watch. Again, I have two words for the system: who cares. Besides, the great majority (lawyers) would love it: Great source of income in times of crisis. On the other hand, paparazzi and yellow press journalists may hate it.
