Why do we post?
Having established in the post whore thread that some folks post an inordinate number of offerings, I would like to explore motivation in this thread.
For me, this has acquired a hobby like status. I come here to read, learn and mouth off. I became aware early on that unconventional replies would be more effective so I usually back off the obvious reply and try to find a different angle. I eschew the use of the smilies after a brief, initial affection. Sure, I'll use one now and then but it's fairly rare. I like my words to stand or fall on their own.
At the beginning, I said I would spend my time in the shallow end of the pool and I have mostly stayed there. I'm not a 'quick read' who can pick up nuance and detail so I really have to study the more complex posts others write. Time evaporates for me when I bog down with one or two deep posts so I usually just dog paddle around.
A JimSmith post, with its length, complexity and comprehension of the subject at hand is a thing of wonder for me as I can't type that fast even when I already know what I'm talking about. My range of expertise, by comparison, is very limited.
All of that being said however, I take pride in my posting.
There are 2 dogs lying beside me on the sofa as I type this and my time would certainly be better served playing with them outside or going on a long walk yet here I sit, pecking away at the keyboard. Therefore, I approach my posts as a craft. I really try to make every one relevant, readable and a true addition, whether the subject is light hearted or more weighty.
I search for pictures or videos, sometimes up to 30 pages worth, that I feel are applicable and link them in the hope that others will see it as I see it. It is an investment of MY TIME. This, and others, are not my forums. I am simply a contributor but my offerings represent the best of me (some might think they're the worst of me) and I am proud of each one, in its own way.
I do not make an effort to belittle anyone with malice and I try to take others' ribbing of me in the same spirit. I have lines I won't cross and I feel that I understand the limits. If I make a mistake and a moderator has to step in, I understand, even though I bristle a bit since it is, after all, one of MY posts and how dare you edit it.
I don't know if others feel the same but basically, that's my take on posting. I hope it's healthy.
Thank you for your attention. Carry on.
