When waves threaten to reach half the length of your boat (or more), discretion (and self-preservation) might suggest a hasty retreat.

i concur and one of the boaters ( i presume the owner ) was supposedly experienced.. i'm currently finishing a book about people getting lost in the smokies and also drawing from that, one would definitely have to define this "experience". seems to me that experience may help but when lack of common sense is there, experience means nothing. the lone survivor at least had the common sense to dawn a pfd on. hope the others did too.

recently, during the floods, we had a couple who decided they wanted to go canoing in the torrents of cold winter water.. no PFDs and the results are that one has not been found. shame..
