Americans left out of Fiesta

If it is cost effective for Ford to build in Germany, why not in the US as well ?
This is a direct result of NAFTA.

Quote:
Ford isn't yet revealing a sales target for the U.S. Fiesta. Farley has said demand could be anywhere from 30,000 to 70,000 units annually, but that sales volume largely will be determined by the price of gasoline.

The Fiesta is a much bigger seller in Europe, where the sixth-generation edition went on sale last August. Since then, Ford has sold more than 89,000 units in its main 19 European markets.

The 100 five-door Fiesta hatchbacks being used for the long-term testing program were built in Ford's factory in Cologne, Germany. The cars are powered by a 120 hp, 1.6-liter gasoline engine.

Ford will build Fiestas for North American sale in its Cuautitlan plant in central Mexico.

The Fiesta is the first assault in Ford CEO Alan Mulally's plan to sell global cars. By 2010, the Fiesta will be produced at plants in Germany, Spain, Mexico, Thailand and China.

Perhaps those overseas plants will only produce the smaller cars that sell great in Europe (and other parts of the world), while not selling well here at home. We Americans still want our cake and want to eat it too. If the price of gas had stayed way high, then many of us would be getting out of these SUV's and urban assault vehicles, but with gas only around 2 bucks a gallon, many still feel the need to drive these giant, fuel inefficient vehicles. Our roads are built for them, whereas most other places in the world have a "thinner" road network.

I don't know whether German labor has the same stranglehold as does the UAW in the States, but I rather doubt it.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

It has a much tighter hold on industrial Germany than the UAW has had in the US since the 1970s.

The difference is that they don't use labor costs as an excuse to nearly the same degree. Also, since employees pay higher taxes and their health benefits are addressed on a national level, there is not a concern of legacy costs. Instead of the cost being attached to the cost of a car it is attached to the income tax.

Ford needs to bring it over....

If Ford were to bring it here they should have the diesel option. Currently they have available a 1.4 and a 1.6 TDCi diesel motors. Give us the choice.

I would buy one.....

Everyone is holding off on mass import of diesel. I just don't understand why. We have better fuel now, a good distribution system and enough of them to avoid the old stigma that was associated with them.

I wonder how much of the decision making between the previous administration and their ties with the oil companies had to do with it. I know Audi had one hell of a time getting one of their very high quality diesels certified through EPA/DOT. We might see a change in that soon, just based on the change in dynamics between Washington and the oil industry.
