LaHood was suggesting to tax motorists on mileages. Good thing Obama does not agree with him ...yet. Oh well, we'll see what the future holds....

I seen that in the UK and Paris, but it's to keep the bums from sleeping in there.

This "bipartisan" bullsh!t has got to stop. We didn't elect Barack so he could put bozo republicans in important cabinet positions like Transportation. So this guy figures out a way to make sure that drivers of hybrids and other economical cars can pay just as much highway tax as the worst guzzling SUVs--no matter how much fuel they use. Fire him now.

In the 70's, we used to have to collect the dimes from the Ladies' room Nik-O-Lok nearly every day or the change would spill back out of the coin insert slot.

If they are going to get intrusive enough to GPS miles, there should be no problem in instituting a lookup table that associates a particular device with a class of vehicle and applies a tax according to those criteria.

You would be taxed on type of vehicle [CAFE Index] and number of miles. A Prius might have a $0.0025 per mile tax while a Expedition might have a $0.0075 per mile tax. A discount/exemption for actual business use could be address for work trucks [another class].

The technology would be there, the will to execute is the issue.

And the other issue is states absorbing that suddenly empty vacuum of cost to raise STATE gas taxes at the same time so folks at the pump see little or no savings.

How many old cars are here in this country including our old Benzos. Are they going to install some GPS gadget into our cars? What a waste of tax payer money in this case.
