When Chimps Attack

No this isn't a thread about Palestinian suicide bombers.

Apologies if you were misled by the title.

Rather I was reading the account of the chimp attack on the owner’s friend the other day and had a theory about it.

The story is detailed here: 911 tape captures chimpanzee owner's horror as 200-pound ape mauls friend. It includes the chilling 911 call made by the terrified owner during the attack. The story mentions that the chimp was somewhat agitated earlier in the day and was given some Xanax. As a benzodiazepine, Xanax typically causes sedation, axiolysis, and memory loss but, paradoxically, can result in disinhibition including confusion and aggressive behavior. At least this is the case in humans. Also mentioned in the article is that the chimp was being treated for Lyme disease although it did not specify the stage of the illness. Tertiary Lyme can cause a multitude of CNS problems including encephalitis that may have contributed to the attack (but I think is less likely).

I just thought that these were interesting possibilities as I hadn't seen any speculation as to what may have contributed to his aggressive behavior on that particular day.

Certain species of hominidae, especially adult males, are inherently violent, without potentiation by drugs.

True. And not only hominidae. I'm reminded of the vicious attack on Roy Horn several years ago that appeared to be unprovoked.

I just thought that the theory was interesting in view of the pharmacology of Xanax.

Now if you could just explain how the chimp being shot in the editorial cartoon is racist, we'll have come full circle.

Your theory is pretty good, though. Unfortunately, it's not likely to yield useful results from the standpoint of preventing similar issues in the future.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

Very true. The only way to avert something like this is to prevent people from having wild animals as pets.

To me that's the real lesson of this story.

Free contraception would help too.
