So what's up with Amazon's "free" shipping lately?

Been a while since I ordered from them and I placed an order the other day, both items in stock, chose their free super saver shipping option. Order changed to say they are expected to ship in TWO TO FOUR WEEKS!!! (Anticipated shipping date per the confirming email is between 3/13 and 3/16.)

When did they go over to that model? They used to ship it fairly quickly, then you got it in a week or ten days, so typically not more than 2 weeks from when you ordered so long as the item was in stock. Now they just sit on it for a month? Is the idea that you'll instead opt to pay them for shipping (really, just shipping it sooner) so you don't forget what you ordered in the meanwhile?

Seems like a sleazy, underhanded way to do business.

Ditto.

I'm a big fan of their three dollar used books that cost another five to ship... maybe they're trying to steer you away from those.

I ordered a air purifier from them, free shipping was quoted as shipping in 8-10 days.

We are on their Amazon.com Prime program which provides next day free shipping. We get about two or three deliveries a week, and are able to share the program with family members.

I have not had to wait even four days for a book in a couple of years.

Now, that said there is an Amazon distribution center here in Lexington and I know several folks there. They have not been hiring as many people as in the past on their distribution floor so that might be the cause of the issue as they prioritize their distribution/shipping.

I don't think I've ever had to pay S&H on Amazon. No one else should either, unless you order something for under $25...

Don't believe everything you think

Anything they sell directly, that's true and always has been, basic ground shipping is free once you spend $25. (Have you noticed how so many of their "deals" are just under that, $24.88 or 24.99? Nice inducement for you to buy one more thing...). However, they do have their "marketplace" where others can sell through them and then you pay whatever that shipper charges and some of those can be outlandish (I've see a $10 shipping charge on a $5 item that weighed one ounce...).

That's what is so odd about this one and why it struck me that way. Both items sold directly by Amazon. Both items are in stock, total is about $160. It all looked cool until I changed it to super saver free shipping, that's when the big delay reared it's ugly head. I'm not in a particular hurry or I wouldn't have completed the transaction before thinking about it more, but the idea of it galls me.

As I say, maybe that's their new deal, they're happy to ship it free but you're going to wait even longer for it (by the time I actually receive the items it will be close to and maybe over a month from the date I placed the order). Perhaps they think that will provide an incentive for people to pay for basic or perhaps even expedited shipping, but in my case if that is how it works the next time I shop there I'll be looking elsewhere, it just seems underhanded.
