Tax Return IOU's

First California, then Kansas, who'll be next? The word is that there are about 40 more States out there in serious trouble. I'd just like to bitch for a moment. I can only really speak to the bureaucracy that is Northern Virginia, but I suspect it's the same elsewhere. These local and state governments have LEGISLATED revenue. Then, once the legislation is passed, they proceed to create big expensive programs, housed in big expensive buildings, full of under-utilized employees to manage the regulation of these various fee based programs. Lots of big fat asses in big fat padded chairs doing jack shit. Permit for this, permit for that, etc, etc. Now, their customer base is gone. Unless they legislate a permit for breathing or a sitting 'round the house tax, they're gonna be screwed. These people are legislating their revenue for Christsakes and can't manage their overhead? They can't keep their expenses in check? This is the end result of having your hands in everyone's cookie jars. In the private sector it's called greed. I don't know what the government calls it, but I suspect there's a catchy acronym for it somewhere.
How about "Getting Back to the Business of Government and Otherwise Staying the Hell Out of Everyone's Lives" (GBBGOSHOEL). I know it's not that catchy, but it's a start.

I don't know how VA is but in Kentucky they have, over the past decade been laying off state workers over time to where now everything is in backlog. Stuff that used to be able to be done ASAP now is backlogged.

Everyone bitches during tax/budget time but always wants good roads and those roads salted NOW and the cleanup for wind or flood or ice to be done yesterday. And then we bitch if they don't regulate a bank and let it go rogue and bitch when salmonella gets in the salad bar at Wendy's.

We ask a bunch from our government and much like Corporate it has overhead and a bunch of execs who don't seem to do much of anything [check out IBM or ATT or AiG or GE for examples] but the folks who are actually doing the work seem to be getting more and more work with less and less help. At least that is how Kentucky is doing it.

I don't know if we are going to get our refunds or not, that has not made the news yet. People are still whining about the beer tax.

Are you using the figurative "we" regarding KY tax refunds?

You, of all people, are the last who I would expect pays more into the tax coffers throughout the year than you actually owe. Maybe the new house in '08 threw your calculations off but I can just picture you holding a tax return showing that you owe $1 in one hand and a big "I Win!" sign in the other.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
