I asked him about his feelings toward karting last night, and he seemed open to it. We've been looking at oval stuff for so long that I don't think he considered it an option; and the reason we were looking at the oval stuff was because that seemed to be where the fields were. I'm digging into the karting scene here in town. I've seen them practice at the same facility we raced at last year, but haven't seen an actual race (they're on Sundays). It looked like there were a fair amount of karts out there, and they can accommodate quite a few classes, including 125cc shifters.

Here's a picture of the track, which usually runs counter-clockwise. Lap record for the configuration without the tight infield section in a shifter kart is about 25.9 seconds, and the slower karts still get around in under 28 seconds. The "175R" turn at the bottom left of the pic is banked at around 28 degrees or so and is taken flat out at speed. The section at the top of the pic is about 15 feet below grade.

So what your saying is, that your 14yo son is taller that Yosey and Drew put together.

He is; I sort-of was but you'd never guess that now. What the hell does that explain?

When he's 14, he will be taller than Yosey and Drew put together. We have some time for him to grow and them to shrink before that happens though.

Okay, as an update, we went to the track to test an '08 Birel "Junior 1 Novice" kart with a strong MiSi Racing Yamaha 100 motor. It was barely 50 degrees, mostly sunny, so everything was pretty cold. The track record in this class is 29.7 seconds. His first laps were in the 34.5 second range as he got familiar with the track & kart (one spin).

At the end of his first 8 laps, he got his two best times down to 33.00 and 33.01. He then ran another 7 laps, and got his two best times down to 32.56 & 32.16. The kart we tested was provided by the club President / retired racer / mechanic and shop owner / karting father, and it actually sat on pole its first time out - in Daytona, among a field of hundreds.

It was cold but very educational, and the President found the boy to be "an impressive little driver". Which made mom & dad smile pretty big.

Pres also informed us that this club does put on the full wets and run in the rain. It's actually rare not to from what he was saying. So, that sold the boy. He's not quite as opinionated as dad, but he hates series that don't run in the wet just like we do.

Season starts next weekend, and track time = faster laps. So I might be sparse around here for a while.

Thanks to everyone for their input, and for advocating the series I was secretly hoping the boy would get excited about!
