OBA Commerce Sec. Nominee withdraws

I guess the 13LL's are too much for him to bear.
You are either with them or against them... sounds familiar doesn't it ? Unfortunately, this time, it really counts.

Gregg Withdraws as Commerce Nominee - washingtonpost.com
New Hampshire Republican Sen. Judd Gregg has withdrawn his name from consideration as President Obama's commerce secretary, a major blow to an administration seeking to put a series of Cabinet problems behind it.

"It became clear to me to me that it would be very difficult day in and day out to serve in this Cabinet," Gregg said in a press conference late Thursday. He added that in the days since he was nominated he realized that to be "part of a team but not 100 percent with the team" was an untenable position.

In his written statement, Gregg cited recent developments regarding the economic stimulus package and the decision to have the next census director report directly to senior White House officials as evidence that he and President Obama were too different ideologically for the pairing to work. "This was simply a bridge too far for me," Gregg said of his decision.

I think he simply did not want his 30 years of public service, getting a good going over by a very "Pissed off Senate GOP", for confirmation. Better that he withdrew on his own. Interestingly, he also Stated he would not run for re-election. One would wonder, Why?

Not 50 years ago he would have been horse collared for that kind of treasonous drivel.

Sounded like he was the one that didn't want to compromise. But then again, we have seen that from much of the Republican side of late. As you said the mantra of "either with us or against us".

If he had not been able to be bipartisan he should not have accepted the offer in the first place.

I am guessing his "application" had some issues.

The battle over the census ...

Quote:
More likely, it was the announcement, made just a couple of days after Gregg's nomination, that the director of the U.S. Census Bureau would work under the oversight of senior White House aides (even as the bureau itself would remain, as the statute requires, part of the Department of Commerce). The story circulating among Hill Republicans is that Gregg wasn’t notified about the Census matter before the announcement, and that he demanded of Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel a few days ago that the decision be reversed. I'm told that Emanuel said he would get back to him, but Gregg heard nothing. So he requested a meeting with the president and said he couldn’t be part of the Obama administration.
