About 3 years ago, while on a 3 day layover in Dubai, I was hanging around the pool (it was over 100 degrees F. out, with bright sun) when I struck up a conversation with a guy in his mid-30's and his niece and nephew. It turned out he was a soccer player from Iran who had been hired to play on the Dubai National Team. His niece and nephew had come down to Dubai on school break, and the three of them were staying at the same hotel as I. We spoke for quite a while, and then went to dinner together at a Lebanese restaurant that I knew of. The next day we met, as agreed, at poolside just after lunch and talked again for hours. During that time he told me that the Iranian people loved America and Americans, but the problem was the government. He also told me about investing (no shit. really) in the Iranian real estate market. He said I'd be able to make over 30% on my money, because housing was going up so fast. He also invited me to come visit him in Iran. When I told him that our countries were not friendly, he said that that wouldn't matter. I told him Thanks, but No Thanks. We went to dinner again that night, and parted friends. A nice guy, and a great way to pass a few days in a far-away place.
