The guy shot the other guy in a high-stress war time situation. I'd give the guy an involuntary MS conviction, give him a few months, or let him off on an insanity defense. My point really had nothing to do with any of that- I was just pointing out that the entire situation is caused by Bush-era American arrogance. In a rural Islamic country, any woman who is placing herself in a position of authority over a muslim man is going to get killed. This woman walks up backed up by a bunch of men with guns and starts talking to the guy, he probably decided it was time to die for Allah rather than take the shame of kowtowing to a Christian woman. It all sounds like an unfortunate mistake by people who have no clue what they are doing. These people whip and execute their women for sport, we shouldn't have any women civilians anywhere in that country. The last analysis I read on the war was one from the Pentagon, which concluded that we needed to spend less time on that nation-building crap and spend our resources fighting in Afghanistan and Pakistan if necessary. This stuff is crap.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
