Both the B-17 and B-24 were good aircraft, but the 17's were stronger built, and could be ditched in the channel with greater safety. The 24 was more technologically advanced with its Davis wing and Fowler flaps.
I heard a lot of stories about how hard the 24 was to fly in formation, but those stories usually involved flying in formation with B-17’s. The 24's had to slow down to stay in formation with the 17's, that's when they were "heavy" on the controls. On it’s own the 24 was just as easy to fly as any other heavy bomber of the day.
