Those targeting Bush should let their hate 'die away'

In this season of reconciliation and hope that we can rise above the corrosive polarization of recent years, a chorus of angry voices has pressed aggressively for criminal charges to be brought against former president George W. Bush, former vice president Dick Cheney and members of the intelligence community thought guilty of constitutional violations or of practicing or sanctioning torture.

A few lonely politicians, some television talking heads and the vitriolic chorus of the blogosphere seek revenge against an administration with which they did not happen to agree on much of anything. This "movement," if one could call it that, makes a mockery of the spirit of generosity and compassion to which President Obama is dedicated.

The country has been here — numerous times — before.

Three decades ago, those screaming for Richard Nixon's scalp in the aftermath of his resignation were appalled when President Ford pardoned him. That act of forgiveness may well have cost Ford his chance to win the presidency in his own right, but it has since been recognized as a gesture essential to reuniting the country after Watergate and stands as a monument to Ford's decency.

Candidates for prosecution abound among presidents of the past. Abraham Lincoln usurped congressional power when he suspended the writ of habeas corpus during the Civil War, and had Franklin D. Roosevelt lost to a Republican in 1940, he might well have been prosecuted for violating the neutrality acts of the late 1930s by clandestinely aiding the British as they stood alone against Germany's Nazis.

Excesses of high office

It should also be recalled that President Kennedy ordered the assassination of a foreign leader, Vietnam's Ngo Dinh Diem, and Ronald Reagan defied an act of Congress by illegally supplying arms to the anti-communists in Nicaragua. Yet there were no serious campaigns to put these presidents on trial.

Bush may lack some of the endearing qualities of those other presidents who strayed over the line, but his excesses differ little from those of his predecessors in that all were responding to crises or emergencies. The "sainted" FDR, so lovingly memorialized in Washington, sent thousands of his fellow Americans into captivity after Pearl Harbor because of their Japanese ancestry. This fault was only belatedly corrected with an apology, but not even those who suffered unjust internment sought to cast FDR as a criminal.

Decency, fair play

The educator David Starr Jordan spoke of America as "the land where hate dies away."

Despite the best efforts of President Obama, hate is being kept on life support by those who thrive on animosity and profit from discord. Like the zealots who hounded President Clinton while boasting of their commitment to the rule of law, the extremists in the news media and among the interest groups are possessed of a kind of legalistic blood lust that can be satisfied only by criminalizing conduct of which they do not approve. They make no allowances for errors in judgment, shortsightedness, overreaching or just plain old fatheadedness, and they accept no atonement.

We can only pray that President Obama, with his sense of decency and fair play will, in time, shame the haters so that we can join with those with whom we disagree and deal with our daunting problems.

We are unwinding his crap as quick as possible. AS soon as the reminders are gone, the hate will go with it.

As I have said before, There are a lot of people who are very pissed off that Bushie broke their country and didn't have the balls to accept responsibility.

We will clean up his mess and move on.

Again with the BDS. Bush did not break the country. CONGRESS did!

Would you please at least do us the courtesy of being intellectually honest? This is a problem that has been brewing over SEVERAL Presidents and the only constant in all this friggin' crap has been the assholes in Congress.

Their approval rating has been even lower than Bush's.

Bush did not do this, Congress did. Your continued insistence otherwise is ridiculous at best.

He even tried to get the "Broke Stuff" fixed and Congress blocked him the whole damn way (both GOP and Dem.)

So at least be realistic and quit it with the BDS. It is beyond comical now.

When you start asking for Barney and Chris' resignation, we'll all know that you have finally reached a credible balanced view. But you still are young.

Look at all the right wing nut jobs coming to Bush's rescue!!!!

Bush ran the country for 8 years and only the last year that the Democrat took over the Congress. So what is your excuse for the first seven years?

Let's try to make it simple so even YOU will be able to understand.
  • CONGRESS was REPUBLICAN for the first SIX years of Bush's Administration and he did not VETO a single measure they passed. COMPLICITY.
  • Statistical Comparison of 1 person to 435 persons is both illogical and disingenuous. Look at the approval rating of EACH individual Congressman for a more accurate comparison.
  • Bush was in charge of ADMINISTRATION of the US Government and all of it's agencies. That is the job of the EXECUTIVE BRANCH. That BUCK thing.
So yes Skippy He broke it. And he didn't have the balls to admit it and his believers don't have the balls to admit it either.

Oh, and the BDS. I believe the D is DENIAL. It must suck to be that gullible.

You will note that I don't ask any elected official to resign, either Left or Right unless they have done something illegal like DeLay or Craig or Foley or Stevens or Rostenkowski. I expect THEIR voters to do their job.

Of course the two you mention were MINORITY when they spoke out and their actions had nothing to do with administration of regulations that were already on the books, now did they?
