BBC under fire over Gaza charity appeal

BBC under fire over Gaza charity appeal
Sun Jan 25, 2009 11:05am GMT

LONDON (Reuters) - The government urged the BBC on Saturday to drop its refusal to broadcast a humanitarian appeal for victims of the war in Gaza.

The BBC said the appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), a coalition of 13 aid agencies, would compromise the impartiality of its coverage.

"The most important thing we can do for the people who are suffering is carrying on reporting it and we've done exemplary work in reporting the suffering of the people of Gaza," Chief Operating Officer Caroline Thomson said.

"If we lose the trust of the audience by appearing...to support one side rather than another, then we will have lost it for the charities themselves as well as everyone else."

Broadcasters ITV and Channel 4 said they would show it, but satellite broadcaster Sky said it had yet to reach a formal decision.

But most attention focussed on the stance of the BBC, which as the national public broadcaster is funded by a licence fee paid by owners of TV sets.

International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander said the British public could distinguish between support for humanitarian aid and perceived partiality in a conflict.

"I really struggle to see in the face of the immense human suffering of people in Gaza at the moment that this is in any way a credible argument," he said.

The BBC has argued that aid access to Gaza is in any case restricted, but Alexander said supplies and personnel had managed to get through on Friday.

"I do not think the fact that limited access is available at the moment is itself an adequate reason not to broadcast an appeal to try and address what is still a dire humanitarian situation," Alexander told BBC radio.

Politicians and aid groups have written to the BBC to try to persuade it to reconsider its decision, while hundreds of people demonstrated outside one of the broadcaster's London television centres.

About 1,300 Palestinians were killed and more than 5,000 were injured during Israel's 22-day offensive in the Gaza Strip, launched in an attempt to stop rocket attacks on its territory by Hamas militants. Thirteen Israelis died.

MPs back motion on BBC Gaza row

MPs back motion on BBC Gaza row

More than 50 MPs say they will back a parliamentary motion urging the BBC to screen a charity appeal for Gaza.

The BBC says broadcasting the Disasters Emergency Committee film would put its reputation for impartiality at risk.

Criticism over the corporation's decision has come from archbishops, government ministers, charity leaders and 11,000 viewers.

Broadcasters ITV, Channels 4 and Five are to show the appeal later. Sky is yet to make a decision.

The DEC, which represents more than a dozen aid agencies, is asking for money to buy food, medicine and blankets following the Israeli assault on Gaza.

Labour MP Richard Burden is putting forward the early day motion.

He said: "Last time I looked... it was 57 MPs from different parties, Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrats and others.

"I think there's great concern about what the BBC has done here."

Culture Secretary Andy Burnham has said the BBC is right to make its own judgement over the appeal.

BBC director general Mark Thompson said the danger for the BBC "is that this could be interpreted as taking a political stance on an ongoing story".

A string of politicians, including International Secretary Douglas Alexander, Communities Secretary Hazel Blears and opposition spokesmen, have urged the corporation to reconsider its position.

Their comments drew criticism from BBC Trust chairman Michael Lyons who said some were "coming close to constituting undue interference in the editorial independence of the BBC".

The corporation's former director general, Greg Dyke, said it was in a "no win" situation.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has accused the BBC of getting its priorities "upside down".

The Church of England also waded into the row, with the Archbishop of York appealing for the BBC to consider humanity, not impartiality, and show the film.

In a direct appeal to the BBC, Dr John Sentamu said: "Come on Auntie Beeb. Wake up and get on with it."

The Charity Commission, which regulates UK charities, echoed calls for the BBC to reconsider, saying the work of the agencies would be hampered without "maximum public support".

However, Conservative MP Mark Field believes the row has boosted the profile of the appeal.

"The high profile controversy has given this appeal more publicity than it could possibly have imagined getting," he said.

"In many ways, it has achieved a lot of its aims that way without necessarily having to have a fully-fledged BBC coverage."

this merely indicates that perhaps at last the BBC hierarcy have realised their history of left wing / terrorist bleeding heart biased reporting.
Plus they are quite rightly a wee bit sensitive at the moment with Jonothan Woss being back on air.
The BBC dosnt want middle class moderates like me to stop paying the licence fee do they.
Fuckers ( mostly )

The BBC began the long drift from its original Charter as a Public Service (by enforced subscription) when it got involved twenty years ago in promoting the National Lottery, Live Aid and the annual Christmas charity appeals e.g, Children in Need, etc.

It's all part of the left-wing nannyfication of the UK Nation, where though-control is essential. "We want your money, so hand it over".

Those folks overseas just watching BBC TV news or Top Gear would be unaware of these BBC activities at home.

Z it would take too long but from a moderate Presbyterian N Ireland perspective ( whose 15 year old daughter asked this summer, "Daddy, which lot marches on the Twelth?", just in case you would think I am a drum beating marching type)
Down through the years
Devout Roman Catholic (Er, that was a terrorist.)
but
Rabid Protestant
If you get my drift.
a programme about the Nationalist housing estates built in (say 1965) not having room to park cars outside their house, because hey Roman Catholics could not afford cars.
FACT
The loyalist housing estates were built to the same layout/dimensions, not mentioned in that programme.
Unfortunately skilful propaganda does work.
Even the very "unemployed RC thing?
Yes
I accept that the Protestants got all the jobs in the Shipyard etc
However, the Nationalists tended to work in the construction and licenced/hotel trade, paid cash, not in the figures ESPECIALLY if one was claiming benefits as well.
Lies, dammed lies and statistics strikes again
Plus basically a fair percentage of the dross from Derry were unemployable

How typical of you to put up that well-know supporter any Left-wing cause - Tony Benn.

Born an aristocrat, and now a wealthy millionaire via marriage, he lives in the grand manner, and espouses any Left-wing cause going. Seen at all demos, this crack-pot has been a national joke since he started his career as a Ban-the Bomb activist. When in government as Minister of Power he approved the Nuclear power industry, and forgot his opposition to nuclear weapons. He is a complete fraud, but you are too gullible to realize that.
