By having gone through grades 1-5 in Cuba before coming to the US, I was exposed to the communist process of children being brought with one-sided political minds, promoting hatred for the US.
They teach it in school, on TV, in censored newspapers etc.
Had it not been for smart parents who diffused all that crap, Id still be there, marching in olive green and teaching it to kids.
These teachings, plus having initially removed all weapons from the public, is what kept the people in my country of birth sedated and tricked for over five decades.
Nixon was wrong; you CAN fool all the people all the time..The Castros did it by taking their guns then exiling, incarcerating or murdering all who did not side with them.
Aferwards, they brainwashed the kids into believing Castros way is the only choice.
I see this conflict in a similar way; The fighting continues with all sides bringing up new generations in a "hate you neighbor" way, as if that's how God intended it.
I mean; what is Hamas, Israel if not but a few people manipulating their side to act THEIR way.
So what if all sides one day ran out of people who hate one another?
I am reminded of how the KKK was actually a strong movement in the early days and now they are the laughing stock of civilized Americans.
For these reasons I believe one way to begin the peace is to stop teaching hate in school and at home.
If you are preaching that the only way is total dominance and wiping out anyone who does not belong to your religion, or if you only complete only a portion of your promises to the other party, achieving peace will take fresh blood and a re-tooling of core beliefs, which is hard to do if you grow up knowing nothing else but hate-driven violence.
Let's look at America, for second
America may be a lot of things to those who don't side with its basic political beliefs.
However the process in place has always proven that if something isn't working, like continuing the war, the people who believed it would work are ultimately replaced, ( by the voters ) for some with a different view.
A better example is looking at what we celebrated yesterday ( MLK day ) and what's going on today in the Oval office, with president Obamas inauguration.
This process, which went from kicking african americans off the buses in the 50s to electing one to run the country did not take place overnight.
It also did not have much to do with parties like the KKK or black panthers violent approach, either. If anything, their hatred for others helped illustrate the need for americans to stop hating one another.
In th US, kids of all races that grew up knowing how change was needed, kids who were taught acceptance of others religious beliefs and equal opportunity is the correct way to live together grew up, flexed their political muscles and realized Dr King's dream
Since a lot of it has to do with bringing our kids to understand diplomacy and tolerance for those who do not have our same beliefs. I don't see how the middle east conflict is all going to end today but one can at least dream about it, right?
Make that dream the same for all sides, with equality as the beacon and see what happens.
I vote for America, the land of the free.
