yes, you need the passport from where you are + the green card to be able to re-enter to the USA.

Unless you are a Stateless person without a passport like some Palestinians etc., you use the passport of the Country of your birth, and your green card.
If I remember correctly, out of 12 month of the Year, the holder of a permanent U.S. residence permit has to reside for a mandated period of time in the U.S., or the permit (green card) will expire.

As a German National, who has been a legal resident of Burkina Faso, Iran, and the U.S.
My passport, and the permit of the Country I resided in, was all I ever needed to travel.
driver's license or ID is worthless in this situation. just a few years ago that is all one needed to re-enter usa but not anymore. now, withouth a passport and/or g-card you will not be able to re-enter at all.
