Only if you want to STOP the train, not correctly manage it.
The issue is that everyone has priorities. While I might find it very much OK to spend money on advanced science or technology for hospitals. others find it OK to spend money on bureaucracies like Homeland Security and TSA who have absorbed a tremendous amount of money with unknown benefits [albeit a great stash of shampoo and nail clippers for all government employees].
And the thing with looking at a system the size of the US Government is that there are so many variables that affect both revenue and appropriations. The special interest "earmarks" that usually get the brunt of the "out of control government" commentary only account for $18-30 Billion [depending on what you count] which is less than 1% of the 3TRILLION budget [BUT SURE GET A LOT MORE ATTENTION]. And I would bet that everyone on this board would be able to justify at least 25% of those.
So the problem might really be that it does take $3Trillion or more to run this country in the 21st Century. I would imagine that deficit spending could be curtailed if Iraq and the financial crisis had not occurred but those two issues are a matter of putting someone in at the top who is very smart and does not make rash decisions.
If that is the case, it is not a matter of "rewarding the idiots" as much as it is a reality that they are spending what needs spent. With this recession, and some programs cut back, we should start seeing what is necessary and what is not.
This is my whole point though. We need to stop the train. The current systems are not managing it at all. We have a group of men (for the most part) who are away from home and the stabilizing factors associated with home (family, friends, etc) who seem to lose all sense of appropriateness when it comes to spending other peoples money.
They need to be stopped and they need to have new PLC units installed.
