US Unemployment Map...a 15 month look

This is one of the scariest looking maps I have seen in years. It provides a visual of the economic carnage that is occurring across this country and provides absolutely no hope for a quick resolution.

Hit the play button on the top left of the map for the "picture is worth a thousand words" view.

But, but, but Jay said the economy is fundamentally sound. Didn't he also said no recession, and the unemployment figure is incorrect?

Well, he is 33% correct. The Unemployment figure only accounts for those currently on ACTIVE Unemployment Insurance. It does not take into account all the folks who have rolled off the UI's 26 or even 39 Week payment periods. After that the unemployed simply are no longer counted.

Cool head in the sand approach that our government uses.

I was playing w/ that map yesterday, but it didn't scare me nearly as much as it did the bear. It is not good, but it was worse during the Clinton years. You can relax bear, you'll be in hibernation all winter anyway and maybe it will improve by the time you come out of your cave. Nighty-night...

Don't believe everything you think

Only if you count the first months of the Clinton years when the Bush1 numbers were coming down [oops].

And during those years, we had a strong manufacturing base to make a recession easier to dig out of. That no longer exists thanks to years of offshoring and NAFTA. Note also that the numbers are trending sharply DOWNWARD, not flat or up.

If the on schedule rate is 7.2% now, expect it to be at 9%+ by Q3. That will put TOTAL unemployment at closer to 16-18%. But you can do as you did for the last three years and just keep your head in the sand. Apparently that works for you.

It really is.

The sectors that pay less for the most part grew and the ones that pay higher dropped. The exception is government sector which grew on a local/state level and professional services [which is starting to turn downward now].

As I have told young folks for the past five years, get in the health field. I do think it has the best long term future. Us boomers are going to start flooding the market for their services and we are going to live a long time.

Here are the BLS lookup tables to see just where the numbers are/were at any given time in history.
