If they were going for realism, my dad told me that the various American tobacco companies shipped boat loads of free cigs to the troops. He started smoking while in Europe in 1943.
As a second piece of somewhat related trivia. Prior to D-Day, knowing the troops were going into Europe, the Army passed out condoms to everyone, as many as they wanted. Apparently one of the better uses was to wrap around the cartons of cigarettes so they didn't get wet during the landing.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
