Looks like the dems shouldn't have been so quick to seat him. Politics as usual -- and particularly -- for Illinois, I suppose.

Dec. 30, 2008: Blagojevich appoints Roland Burris to Obama's seat as Illinois senator.

Democrats in congress balk at seating Burris because they feel that his appointment may be tainted by impropriety in view of the FBI investigation into Blagojevich’s “pay to play” scheme.

Burris pleads innocent claiming that there was no quid pro quo in his nomination. Suspicious Senate Democrats, reluctant to seat Burris, make his appointment contingent upon his full and honest testimony before an Illinois House panel investigating impeachment charges against Blagojevich.

Burris files an affidavit (#1) with the house committee alleging no contacts between the governor or his staff preceding his nomination.

Burris then testifies before the House committee and is asked if he had any contact with the governor or any of his staff. He was asked, specifically, if he had contact with Lou Monk (the governor’s former chief of staff) and Rob Blagojevich (the governor’s brother) among several others. Burris responded that he did have contact with Lou Monk but did not volunteer that also had contact with Rob Blagojevich. When this surfaced subsequently Burris claimed that although he was asked about all of these specific contacts nobody came back and questioned him about the governor’s brother. (This seems incredibly disingenuous as his contact with the governor’s staff is at the heart of the investigation). House Democrats ran interference for Burris and prevented further questioning during the hearing.

When it became clear to Burris and his attorney earlier this month that he was caught on FBI tapes discussing the senate seat with Rob Blagojevich he files an amended affidavit (#2) to the House committee acknowledging contact with him. It was subsequently revealed (and Burris admitted) that Rob Blagojevich asked him to raise campaign money. Burris agreed to do so but after several unsuccessful attempts at soliciting his previous donors came back and told the governor’s brother than it would not be ethical to do so!

So Burris, parsing words, with holding information he knew the committee was seeking, filing amended affidavits to the House committee only after FBI wiretaps revealed that he had lied initially is now claiming that it is all a misunderstanding.

Burris is now under investigation for perjury.

It’s pretty clear that this lying piece of shit was willing to say or do anything to get the Senate appointment and succeeded largely based upon his (and his supporters) playing the race card and claiming that the Dems in Congress had initially refused to seat him based upon racial considerations..

His story today differs too much from the one that got him accepted. I would expect a review of that decision.

And one must wonder what his story will be tomorrow? He's now got at least three different versions.

Boot his butt back to Illinois; there has to be SOMEONE in the state that understands and aspires to these words: "FACT", "HONESTY", "INTEGRITY" and "REPRESENTATION".

Of course, the odds are that none of those eight people will WANT the job....

Illinois governor says Sen. Burris should resign

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn on Friday called on fellow Democrat Roland Burris to resign from the Senate, saying the controversy surrounding Burris' appointment to the seat was hurting the state and his constituents. Quinn praised Burris as an honorable man, but said a shadow hangs over him after revelations the senator attempted to raise money for disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who appointed him, and failed to disclose multiple conversations with Blagojevich advisers.

"To step aside and resign is, I think, a heroic act and I ask Roland to do that," Quinn said at a news conference.

In the event Burris does resign, Quinn said lawmakers should quickly pass legislation to fill any Senate vacancy by special election, rather than gubernatorial appointment.

"At no time should our state go without full and fair representation in the United States Senate," Quinn said. He declined to say who he might temporarily appoint if Burris resigns.

Burris has given no indication of heeding the many calls for him to resign, including from other Democratic lawmakers. He was on a listening tour of the state Friday and is refusing to speak publicly about the controversy. Messages seeking comment on Quinn's statements were not immediately returned.

Burris, a former Illinois attorney general, testified before the Illinois House committee that recommended Blagojevich's impeachment in January that he hadn't had contact with key Blagojevich staffers or offered anything in return for the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

Last weekend, however, Burris released an affidavit saying he had spoken to several Blagojevich advisers, including Robert Blagojevich, the former governor's brother and finance chairman, who Burris said called three times last fall asking for fundraising help. Burris, a former state attorney general, changed his story again this week when he admitted trying, unsuccessfully, to raise money for Blagojevich.

Illinois lawmakers have asked local prosecutors to look into perjury charges, and a preliminary U.S. Senate Ethics Committee inquiry is under way. Burris denies lying under oath.

The mess Illinois goes beyond politics, everyone wants to see him gone.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
