I've heard it is more expensive for the tourists there than anywhere else in the Caribbean.

So yes, give Q his cigars, other than that it can stay Communist.

There are US born Cubans here who are now middle-aged; they don’t know anything about Cuba or Castro nor do they give a damn. They advocate establishing normal trade and ending travel restrictions – the rest will fall into place.

I just finished David Halberstam'sThe Fifties, which I found captivating (although lengthy!). One of the later sections involves Cuba and the many attempts (some successful) at interference in their domestic affairs by the U.S., especially the CIA. Bracing and shocking, even to me.

Yes, Castro was once our friend – he promised he wasn’t a commie and then stabbed us in the back – we’ve been trying to get back at him like a jilted lover ever since. Moronic.

Even the Cuban born who ‘fled’ as children or young adults admit the failure of the last 50 years and want restrictions lifted.

Well, FWIW, Halberstam makes a fairly well-documented case that Castro was shrewdly playing the US & USSR off each other--it was the height of the cold war--but the US tipped the scales with wholesale and corrupt maniuplations of Cuban political and industrial interests. YMMV of course.

Yes, the time to normalize relations with Cuba is long overdue. The small minded, vindictive mindset of the cold war should be replaced with one that serves America's best interests. Such as befriending Cuba and Venezuela and any other nation in our hemisphere to add to our allies in the area and avoid making conditions that foster anti-American terrorist groups or safe havens for such groups. The absurd posture we have toward Cuba and Venezuela is doing us, as a nation of varied ethnicities and not just disgruntled Castro hating ex-Cubans, no good. Jim

It is one hell of a beautiful place now and while there are those who may argue the standard of living would rise (and it may well) there is a pretty solid standard of living there now, granted, not right up there with the rest of the Western world but pretty equal for most nonetheless...

(caveat - it has been about six years since I was last there, things change)
A couple of friends from here went down to fish for black bass several years ago. Had to go through Mexico to do so. This was in the mid 80s. They said it was very nice.

I think you are correct that it would just end up another Jamaica or Cayman but as pointed out, there are a bunch of folks who, due to sucky timing have not seen friends and family for half a century.
