California Drivers re: GPS

Effective January 1, 2009

Global Positioning Systems (SB 1567) This new law allows a portable GPS device to be mounted in a 7-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield on the passenger side of the vehicle, or in a 5-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side. These are the only two locations on a windshield where a GPS device can be mounted. The GPS device can only be used for navigational purposes while the motor vehicle is being operated, and it is required to be mounted outside of an airbag deployment zone.

Apparently, nobody in the California state legislature understands the concept of "adding value".

This bill was written so you can add a GPS to those two spots on detachable mounts. A factory location is just fine (center console). Basically it is giving you more options and not less. IMHO

SB 1567, Oropeza. Windshield: GPS device.
Existing law prohibits any person, except as specified, from driving any
motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed,
affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver’s
clear view through the windshield or side windows.
This bill would additionally exempt from these provisions a portable
Global Positioning System (GPS), which may be mounted in a 7-inch square
in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver or
in a 5-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver,
if specified conditions are met.
