Take a good hard look around here!
I think it is different. Ideally, religious beliefs impact your personal lifestyle and perhaps that of your family. And that's just fine, and very easy to respect. But once beliefs become politicized, they transcend personal experience and impact others in meaningful and often deleterious ways.

Historically the intellectuals speak to those whom they think might agree or benefit or instigate influential debate. You're not asking for so called intellectuals to be silent are you?

^ Christianity has historically never welcomed debate or scrutiny -- on any level. Heresy anyone?

There are many substitutions that could be used for the word religious in your above statement.

Hence the feeble attempt by the OP to disguise the politicized, dictatorial minority by folding them into the larger 80 percent who profess a belief in a god. More and more of that larger group are having their eyes opened. A veritable epiphany, one might say....

I think that a minority of the OP's majority truly want to govern with their religion and its associated morality (were that not true, we'd likely have a different president-elect, I suppose). Multi is correct, though, that the desire to govern, to impose "our" superior morality on the evil doers of the other party/religion/focus group/etc. is quite strong.

I suppose to those who believe in it, yes.
But that doesn't mean they will practice 100% what is in it.
