The Los Angeles Trolley Car Scandal

Before National City Lines, Los Angeles used to have one of the best public transportation systems in the Nation.

National City Lines, Inc. (NCL), was a company formed in 1920, reorganized in 1936 into a holding company for the express purpose of acquiring local transit systems throughout the country.[1] In 1938, NCL entered into exclusive dealing arrangements and obtained equity funding from companies seeking to increase sales of commercial buses and supplies, including General Motors, Firestone Tire, Standard Oil of California and Phillips Petroleum, which enabled NCL to buy out more than 100 electric streetcar systems in 45 cities including, but not limited to, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, and Tulsa. Those systems were ultimately dismantled and replaced with bus systems in what became known as the Great American streetcar scandal.

In 1949, General Motors, Standard Oil of California, Firestone Tire and others were convicted in the Federal District Court of Northern Illinois for conspiring to monopolize the sale of buses and related products to local transit companies controlled by NCL and other companies, but were acquitted of conspiring to monopolize the ownership of these companies. The verdicts were upheld on appeal

That's your version. I've seen the movie.

Right here where we're standing, will be the cornerstone of my idea... the cloverleaf -- an elegant cement structure that intertwines freeways.

What the hell's a freeway?

A freeway, Mr. Valiant, is eight lanes of asphalt running uninterrupted from L.A. to Pasadena. Pasadena to Hollywood. Hollywood to Santa Monica. Someday everyone will be in cars driving happily, non-stop from one end of the L.A. Basin to another.

That's what this is all about? Tell me, who's gonna use your lousy freeway? We got the Red Cars, the best public transportation in the country.

Not for long. We're retiring the Red Cars. People will drive, Mr. Valiant, because they'll have to. And when they drive, they'll have to buy our cars, our tires, our gasoline.

Why'd you bother to call it a freeway?

Has a nice ring.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

This is an absolute is the sprawl-industrial-complex development patterns that have enslaved more than a half-century of Merkins, beholden to their cars for their sole sources of transportation. We have decades of catch-up to undertake, as we prepare for a more prosperous future. Paradigm shifts in transportation infrastructure and local/regional development policies are exactly the sorts of investments the incoming Obama Administration should be choosing for their "stimulus-bailouts".

Did I mentioned that over 95% of the population in this country is but a slave for the uber rich and we are at their mercy, social design and whatever they feel like playing?
