No , it is not just a silly shoe tossing. For Bush it is the ultimate humiliation. The significance of this event cannot be understated.

"... ultimate humiliation?" Of all the incredibly stupid comments in this thread, that one takes the cake! He didn't look at all humiliated to me. But the Iraqis, on the other hand, were very humiliated. And rightfully so!

President Bush arrives in Afghanistan on surprise visit...

KABUL, Afghanistan – President George W. Bush got a firsthand look Monday at the situation in the seven-year-old Afghanistan war, amid preparations in his administration to hand a broad strategy overhaul over to President-elect Barack Obama and to significantly increase the U.S. troop presence.

Bush spoke to U.S. soldiers and Marines stationed in Afghanistan at a hangar on the tarmac at Bagram Air Base. The rally for over a thousand military personnel took place in the dark, cold pre-dawn hours — it was about 5:30 a.m. local time when the president strode into the hangar to loud cheers.

"Afghanistan is a dramatically different country than it was eight years ago," he said. "We are making hopeful gains."

Bush then took a helicopter ride to Afghan President Hamid Karzai's palace in Kabul — the portion of the 40-hour journey that made his security detail the most nervous. At the compound, Bush and Karzai reviewed an honor guard dressed in long tunic coats of dusty blue and olive with yellow belts and epaulets.

Inside, Bush received a warm personal welcome from Karzai. ...

That is the main problem with Bush - he is so clueless he wasn't humiliated. The main objection I have to the shoe throwing incident is that it was an emotional reaction that will, like most emotional outbursts, generate a series of emotional reactions in response. Some of those reactions will be to "feel sorry" for, or otherwise support, Bush.

Once Bush is out of office the Iraqis should take their case against the US and Bush up with the UN and the World Court. I wasn't real clear on this last time I said it - Bush is on his way out by the nature of our system, and with Obama in place Iraq might have a chance at bringing their case to world stage. The massive fuck up that is the US invasion and occupation of Iraq needs to be splayed out in front of the American people, repeatedly, until there is some evidence the lessons have been learned.

Yeah, Bush is a douche bag. The guy threw a shoe, a substantial, meaninglful insult in his world. Hopefully it stays at merely an insult and Bush continues to disregard its real meaning. I would hate for this to become another reason to support more Bush bullshit for some Americans.

The only Iraqis who have a problem w/ the USA are the Bathists who lost their jobs when the dictator Saddam Husein bit the dust--thanks to the USA.
