I heard there was some university that was going to teach it or make it mandatory to get islamic education and there was a big fuss. I know they teach Arabic in many colleges now.

No, I learned about languages in general which included Arabic. I just happened to pick up more of it as I traveled for the World Bank and other businesses. I speak other languages too

No, but I have one of my own. When my son learnt surat alFeel (a few lines) by heart he was so proud of himself and wanted next to learn surat alBaqara (48 pages ) because he thought he learnt the big one and in no time he can learn the smaller one.

I took Spanish in High school. A foreign language for 2 years was required.

The mere fact that you don't know the history of that region should make you think twice before you tell someone else that you have attained wisdom on the subject. You're still young so I highly suggest you get educated on the matter if you really want to understand it but you know that it's a lot easier to sing along like you have been told to do
In other words, Palestine (as well as Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq,..) was part of the Ottoman Empire which as you know lost in WWI. This doesn't mean these countries didn't exist and the lands were empty deserts. It only means they were not independent political entities which doesn't give any group of outsiders the right to occupy the land and expel the people under the force of arms to set up a state of their own.

In 1948, Israel was declared on parts of Palestine. The rest was put under the governance of Egypt and Jordan. In 1967, Israel occupied the rest plus some Syrian land (Golan Heights) and Egyptian (parts of Sinai).
