The "Palestinian People" have yet to be a coherent group, coherent enough to establish a stable political identity with leaders empowered to make binding decisions
All of this is quite impossible when you are systematically starved, bombed, slaughtered and ground beneath a boot, my friend.
I don't have any money bet on the outcome, and would prefer the US would just butt out.
You and I have billions bet on the outcome each and every year, whether we like it or not.
Partisans of the Israeli right wing have no realistic hope of achieving the same intense fervor among the vast range of the American populace as they have among their own ranks--that mania which declares "God gave US this land!" and which verges upon--and often crosses over into--bloodthirst and violence.
Despite decades of incredibly effective and pervasive mass-media propaganda in this country, they don't really expect--or even need--that level of fanaticism. A tiny bit of the reality in Palestine passes through the media filters in this country and even that is enough, given that there are many Americans of good conscience, to prevent that level of fanaticism here. But they don't need that. All they need is for enough Americans to say, regarding the Israelis and Palestinians, "A pox on both their houses!" "I wash my hands of this mess!" "They've been at each others' throats for millennia!" (Patently untrue, by the way) and so on.
Because so long as an ample majority of Americans can be persuaded not to interfere,
the partisans of the Israeli right wing are able to maintain the status quo, and it is a hideous status quo as will be apparent to anyone with the inclination to look closely enough. That, of course, counts out nearly everyone in North America--thanks to those decades of propaganda.
As a result, Israel can count on billions every year from American taxpayers, and many billions more, however obtained, from billionaires such as Sheldon Adelson, Sumner Redstone, Ira Rennert, Eli Broad, S.I. Newhouse, Hank Greenberg, Mortimer Zuckerman, Bernie Madoff (cough), etc etc. Most of them not household names (until they get in major trouble) but they decide what "truth" is for most Americans, not to mention who runs for the top offices of either major political party. Now, how many of them have you seen step up to offer assistance to our own great country in its time of need? This nation which has enriched so many of them beyond all measure and reason?
Media control (much of it self-censorship) plays out in more ways than you might imagine. For example, how many times have you seen attention (much of it censorious) paid to the salaries of major sports stars? Now, how many times have you seen attention paid to the paychecks of the teams' owners?
Do you even know who the teams' owners are?
Look at Bernie Madoff just last week. There was a pervasive emphasis in the media upon his Jewish victims. Yet, as the facts come out, we see that most of his victims--and his greatest victims--weren't even Jewish.
Look at how anyone's career in public life--and much of private life--can be ended by an accusation
of anti-semitism. It doesn't even have to be proven, or even defined. Could a tool as powerful as that really not be ripe for abuse?
Look at our heroic new President. What was the first
thing he did after winning the Democratic Nomination? He gave a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. What was the first thing he did after winning the Presidential Election? He named Rahm Emmanuel--an Israeli partisan and son of a Zionist terrorist--as his Chief of Staff. First thing.
Okay, much like you I can go on forever, but am in a merciful mood just now
A couple last things come to mind though. Income and wealth statistics in this country are broken down into every imaginable category and analyzed--except one. Even leaving this angle aside, I have noted that we are treated to median
figures but never average. We're told that the median is more meaningful. But I'd like to see
the average--and it's impossible to find, even in this age of the Internet. My own rough calculations indicate that publishing average
wealth and income statistics would be incendiary. In short, there's more than enough wealth to go around, even after this past year.
For all I know, Jim, you yourself may be Jewish. And to that, I would say "so what?" Because there are many Jews of conscience--more articulate than I--who would endorse everything I have written here. Noam Chomsky, Norman Finkelstein, Michael Neumann, Israel Shahak, and Michael Lerner come to mind, and there are more like Tony Judt who would dismiss me as hopelessly mild-mannered.
Jim, I have known you for a few years now, and have always been impressed with your strong intellect and no less by your intense sense of right and wrong. I believe that eventually, enough information will have become clear to you that your point of view will shift. Mine did, some years ago. I used to be a Zionist myself.
