The reason GM and other American car companies can't sell cars is because they make horrible cars, for the most part. The UAW has nothing to do with setting company priorities for the kinds of cars they build, the engineering, the styling or the after sale service. These are the things that US companies have fallen short on in the last several decades. They can't compete on technology, engineering, styling and the pleasantness of ownership experiences.
That is a mindset, more than a fact. Until a sense of pride in American products (mainly automobiles) is instilled in domestic consumers, there will be no turn-around. And until American manufacturers improve in regard to quality.... well it's a Catch-22, isn't it? But some level of pride and confidence must come first or there will be nothing to take pride in. Look at Saturn as an important example of an experiment gone south. What happened to Saturn? Who takes the fall for that impending failure?
