You can use statistics to prove most anything, it's how you frame the issue. I remember our rather prim and proper Civ Pro professor, very respected man, hardly ever heard him raise his voice or use foul language, state, "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, damn lies, and statistics."
Doesn't matter whether you're reading a book or periodical or watching a movie or TV or listening to the radio, you still have to keep your focus to determine if what they say is a forest is a forest, if what they say is a tree is a tree, and whether they or you are missing one for the other.
I am still not convinced about global warming (which, by the way, is now regarded as global climatic change), but my greater concern is that if we "assume" that the weird trends are the result of man's influence, it seems to me that the changes we've seen thus far are too sweeping for us to have much of a chance of reversing it, even if we park our cars, turn everything off and stop burning everything.
