Forget car covers. Apart from the damage they might inflict they are PITA when you want to use the car in a hurry or a storm whips up.
Some good tips:
Treat all your exterior locks with proprietary lock-lube (Moly or graphite based, NOT WD40).
If you want to de-ice it in a hurry, a few gallons of VERY slightly warm water over the glass will melt the ice without the risk of thermal shock. Then squeegee. Much quicker than scraping or aerosol sprays.
Make sure your wipers (and electric windows) are not frozen before switching them on and increase the concentration of your washer fluid.
