It is simple, what does it cost you other than the arrogance of believing that we are the penultimate of creation, to believe in God?
If we as humans are the penultimate, what or who is the ultimate of creation?
You will notice the push back from those who don't believe in the fables and translations of translations of edits of translations of edits of collections of translations that is the current bible came at about the same time that the Christian Conservative movement started trying to push THEIR beliefs on everybody through legislation and PACs and boycotts and condemnation of others. Prior to that, everyone pretty much accepted each others beliefs [at least here in the US] at face value and let folks just be folks.
So the cost involved is the time and effort in stopping ONE religion from trying to push THEIR agenda on the lives of EVERYONE.
Once the Evangelical Christian and Christian Conservative groups in America get a grip on their real place in this big old World, I am sure that things will fall back into place. Until then, they are going to get more and more pushback for their illogical, misplaced, myopic, self-centered, self-absorbed, jingoistic views of religion and their place in it.
