Do you actually question ANYTHING that the media spoonfeeds you?
Just as an FYI Carter left office with an unemployment rate of 7.7% and the current rate is 6.5%
Do you actually read for content?
As another FYI for Carter when he took office until he was kicked out 4 years later the Consumer Price Index rose 37.95% from 56.90 to 72.60
Just for comparison let's look at Bush's WHOLE Presidency to date. We a 28.30% increase in the CPI from 172.20 to 216.097

There is a handy dandy calculator that can help you out with the math if you are challenged in that area like I am.
So let's see...
Unemployment is lower than when Carter screwed us up...Inflation is lower than when Carter screwed us up...
So why is the media screaming that this is the worst economy since the Great Depression.
Oh I know!
That way when Obama takes office in January they can start moderating their rhetoric and have everyone believe that the economy is getting better just because Obama took the oath of office.
Well folks, now you know the rest of the story.
No before you go getting all pedantic and apopleptic, I agree that the economy is in the crapper.
What I don't agree with is the media and its absolute fascination with spinning everything about the economy to look bad right now.
We all know that 50% of the economy is between our ears, or in FTL's case between his left and right Gluteus maximi (that means how we view the economy is just as important as how it actually is.)
I am not saying that the media should report things that aren't true (oh wait a minute they already do that) or misrepresent the truth (oh wait a minute they already do that too). All I am saying is that instead of saying things like "Worst economy since the Great Depression" or "Unemployment at recessionary levels" the should just state the facts. If they want to provide context then do so as I did for example. Show the numbers that most closely correspond to the world events in modern history. Then let people decide for themselves.
